Padd Energy

Case study – Castle Howard

Castle Howard is one of Yorkshire’s finest stately home & gardens, set within 1,000 acres of breathtaking landscape this 18th century residence is located in the Howardian Hills in the heart of North Yorkshire and since mid-2014 the estate has been part powered by renewable energy benefiting from a 99kW biomass boiler designed and installed by PADD.

Project

PADD’s team worked closely with the estates department at Castle Howard to plan & integrate the biomass installation which is capable of generating, 172,228 kWh of clean energy every year.

The existing heating system was suffering from many years of use and due to its age, parts were becoming increasingly hard to find. Demand on the system has steadily increased over the years and the decision was taken to replace the boiler to take advantage of government renewable heat incentives. Several options were considered, including air source heating, oil and biomass; in keeping with the increasing number of environmentally friendly energy solutions used across the estate, PADD was selected to install a biomass heating system.

Our Expertise

PADD has designed and installed a bespoke biomass heating solution for Yorkshire’s finest historic house and gardens, Castle Howard.

Working closely with PADD, the old boiler room was redesigned and adjacent space was converted into an indoor fuel store for the biomass pellets which fuel the new system and houses the boiler. The fuel store holds around 10 tonnes of pellets, which will last around 3 months.

The Castle now benefits from increased efficiency and will lead to a drop in fuel costs as well as much warmer heating output.
